December 31, 1994 the 1st and 2nd battalions of the 131st Brigade 
unopposed, came to the area of the railway station in Grozny 
where he linked up with units of the 81st infantry regiment 
When the columns stood along the streets 
at 19.00 they were attacked by superior forces 
(numbering over a thousand fighters) 
suffered heavy losses and retreated to the station, where he was surrounded.
